A Brief History of the Cone Hat

Since my free cone hat promotion is starting tomorrow I though I would share a little about where they came from!

Originally called Hennin, or conical hennin, cone hats first originated in the middle ages (About 1430). They are thought to have originated in France and spread across Europe from there. They averaged about 12-18 inches in height, but could be as much as 36 inches tall and were worn at an angle tilted backwards.. The top of the hat was usually pointed, but some were flat, or truncated. Hennin normally had veils, or cointoise, that came out of the top of the hat and ranged in length, sometimes ending at the shoulders or sometimes being so long as to touch the floor. Sometimes the veil was pulled over the hat as a way to conceal the face. Cone hats were made of card or wire, to be light, with material stretched over it, but varied in construction and design depending on the country.

Now we only wear these hats for costumes. :)

Don't forget that we are listing 100 free cone hats on a special listing on our website TOMORROW! Keep in touch and spread the word.

Villains

I can't get enough of the new Maleficent trailer! I have probably watched it over 100 times! I think it looks so good and it got me thinking about villains. Every princess needs their villain, so in light of the up coming Fairy Tale February I thought I would make a list of the evil villains that are against our favorite princesses! This is no particular order.

The Women:
Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. She tried to kill Aurora just because she wasn't invited to her birthday party... talk about evil!
The evil queen or Queen Grimhilde from Snow White. She was so vain that she wanted to kill her step-daughter just because she was pretty.
Ursula from The Little Mermaid. This villain is after power and is just pure evil.
Lady Tremaine (I always just knew her as the evil step-mother) from Cinderella. She was not quite evil... just really mean. At least that is my perspective now. Fun fact: she is voiced by the same actress who voiced Maleficent in the animated versions.
Mother Gothel from Tangled. She is another villain who is after beauty and goes so far as to kidnap Rapunzel to use her magic hair to keep her young forever.

The Men:
Jafar from Aladdin. He was after untold power which turned out to be his downfall, what with becoming a gene and all.
Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. He is the true beast of this film, he desperately chases Belle for her beauty, but she sees his beastly core from the beginning.
Ratcliffe from Pocahontas. He is after riches and tries to get rid of anyone who comes in his way.
Dr. Facilier (VooDoo man) from Princess and the Frog. Another man who is after power and control. I thought he was particularly evil and lets face it, kinda cool with his shadow things.
Duke of Weselton from Frozen. He is after power too, and tries to get close to Elsa because of it... at least up till the point where her magic is revealed, then he is the first to turn against her.

The Animal:
Mor'du from Brave. All we really know is that he used to be a very evil/jealous man. He doesn't talk, but I gather that he has to be pretty bad since he tries to kill Merida and her family.

Ps. Don't forget that we are giving away 100 cone hats from a special listing on our website starting Feb. 1st (That is only 3 days away!)

Cone Hat Ideas

In Honor of the upcoming Fairy Tale February, where we are celebrating princesses by giving away free cone hats to the first 100 customers to purchase off a special listing on our website. (Starting Feb. 1st) I thought I would post a little something about what you could possibly do with a cone hat.

1. Give it to a young girl. Maybe your daughter, niece, sister, or granddaughter. Think of her face will light up to be able to wear a princess hat!

#1 give it to a little princess
2. Keep it for yourself and be a princess for a day (or everyday). Just wear your cone hat everywhere! It sounds like a good idea to me!

3. Decorate it. Bling it out, make it even more glamorous!

#3 Decorate it
4. Give it to a Bachelorette to celebrate her wedding!

5. (If you are a guy) Let your girlfriend or wife know she is your princess and give it to her!

#6: Wear with costume
6. Wear it as a costumes, be it for a Renaissance fair, Cosplay, a dramatic performance or just Halloween! Plus, costumes are easily found on my website too!

7. Use it for your photography business. What a great way to spice up a dull picture!

Of course these are only suggestions...

Rag Quilts!

Wow, it has been a while!
So let's play a little catch up.  I got SO busy during Halloween filling orders, I organized my own craft show, I got carpel tunnel surgery, then Christmas orders started to come in, and I was trying to get my own Christmas shopping done. I just kind of forget that I have a blog. Not that I am the best blogger anyway. But to get to the point, I thought I would share what I made for my grandson and granddaughter for Christmas this year!

Now if you have kept up with me you will remember my Super Hero Capes. I love them so much. I also got a new embroidery machine that I love finding excuses to use, so I thought "Hey, why don't I throw together a super hero rag quilt?" So that is what I did! I ran to the store and got some cute Super Hero fabric to supplement it and I went to work.

Now I had already decided that I would give this to my grandson but I needed something similar to give to his sister. I got online and started looking through some embroidery websites and found some really cute cat appliques and I couldn't resist!

I am thinking that I might start listing similar quilts on Etsy.
